Organ Donor

Shane Wintermute

An aviary and a bird-watching tower, Organ Donor embraces the fragmented form, industrial context, and complicated history of the New Jersey Meadowlands. The aviary is left open-air, allowing migrating birds to come and go as they please. Deconstructed shipping containers from the local port are positioned around the aviary and watch tower to create moments of shade, frame views of the site and surroundings, and direct circulation through the structure. Painted with bright primary colors, the containers break up the rough industrial form and lighten the site's presence. The frame is constructed of exposed galvanized steel with exposed connections, sometimes exaggerated, all visible to occupants. The aviary regenerates an ecosystem subjected to economic and economic abuse.

Shane Wintermute is pursuing a Bachelor of Architecture at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. This project was originally prepared for ARCH 296 taught by Esther Zipori in Spring 2023.

This project was published as part of Transect Volume 5: Pedagogy (2024), Jacob Swanson, Daniel Girgis, Dhruvi Rajpopat, Fatima Fardos, Jimenna Alcantar, Elizabeth Kowalchuk, eds.
