New Jersey Institute of Technology’s College of Architecture and Design has unveiled its first catalog which curates the exemplary work of its first year students. When deciding on the title of this publication, we recalled the lecture series we attended throughout the semester, also entitled Transect. It was described as a cut across an ecosystem, creating different areas that exemplify the various approaches and ways of thinking across different design fields. While applying the title to our catalog, we focus on the unifying aspect as we think about first year studios as different environments part of the same ecosystem. Transect is carefully constructed to let the work speak for itself as we take you on the journey that we experienced through each exercise. Beginning with the basics in EX.01 and progressing to the multi-dimensional complexity presented in EX.05, you will see not only an increase in the quality of work, but a deeper understanding of the subject of architecture as well. The work displayed not only highlights the individual creativity of the students chosen, but it also expresses the overall ideas of each studio through the combination of different approaches. Through the collaborative effort of the Honors students and studio professors, this catalog was produced. Although each studio had a different approach to each project, this catalog breaks the barrier that separates each studio, providing a bridge between the unique methods incorporated in each studio into one comprehensive study of First Year Architecture. We hope to capture the creativity, dedication, and intellect of the entire class of first year students within this collection.
