F[Re-]Hamnen
Frihamnen was once a centrally-located shipyard that played a vital role in Gothenburg’s history, from 17th century trade to 20th century wartime preparations. With the Port of Gothenburg having moved out of the city center to be closer to the Atlantic Ocean, Frihamnen has taken on a new role as the host for a variety of leisure events including sailing, go-kart racing, festivals, concerts, and workshops. The city of Gothenburg takes pride in the flexible nature and temporary uses of the space.
However, with a housing shortage in the region, plans to redevelop the port often strictly superimpose buildings onto the land, destroying the site’s current flexibility and remaining historic buildings. Instead of imposing a mono-typology at the nexus of historic Gothenburg, Backaplan and Lindholmen, "F[re-]hamnen" proposes the re-use of the site’s existing structures and infrastructures to facilitate added programs based on the residents' needs. Using a modular framework for future development, this master plan allows for the development of both permanent and temporary uses.
